Social and environmental responsibility

Social responsibility

We are committed to social responsibility in our operations, and it is a strong part of our corporate culture. We believe that through responsible practices, we can create a work environment where everyone can feel that they are part of meaningful work. The overall well-being of our employees is of paramount importance to us, and we want our employees to thrive both at work and in their free time. We offer our employees opportunities for professional development and support their health and well-being. We value diversity and different perspectives. We strive to create an open atmosphere where everyone can feel valued and heard.

For us, social responsibility means not only designing environmentally friendly solutions and adhering to the principles of sustainable development, but also promoting people’s well-being through design. We believe that a well-designed environment has a positive impact on people’s lives. We want to design spaces that promote the sense of community and well-being.

Environmental responsibility

Our certified environmental management system

With the help of a certified environmental management system, we manage the environmental impacts of our own operations and integrate the environmental theme into all our operations. The environmental management system encourages us to be goal-oriented, systematic and effective in the various areas of our operations. We have identified the areas within our operations that have the greatest environmental impacts and, consequently, the greatest potential to influence the environment positively.

Our office’s active environmental studio develops our environmental management system, acting as the core of Lukkaroinen’s environmental expertise. The members of the studio familiarise themselves with the latest information concerning their respective area of responsibility, share it within our company, and both consult and coach on the challenges of environmentally-focused project design.

As part of the environmental management system, the environmental studio has created an information package to support designers in their project work, titled Guide to Environmentally-Focused Design. Other key elements of the environmental management system include the annual calculation of our office’s carbon footprint and the planning of emission reduction measures.

Climate targets

We pay attention to reducing our own emissions, but we recognise that our own carbon footprint as an architectural firm is only a portion of the complete picture. Our real chance to influence the sustainability of the property and construction industry is through the properties we design.

We meet the challenges of the future by increasing our designers’ expertise in designing sustainable and low-carbon environments. We network with actors in the field and share information through collaboration networks. In this way, we offer our clients services and solutions for achieving a carbon-neutral built environment.

Emission reduction measures and their results

• In connection with the Green Building Council’s Building Life project, we have drawn up a carbon neutrality action plan that defines the company’s key emission reduction measures and schedules them for the coming years

• In accordance with our carbon neutrality action plan, our goal is to reduce our emissions relative to turnover by 10% annually.

Supporting voluntary climate actions and the units used for them

• Since 2022, Lukkaroinen has been financing verified additional carbon sequestration by acquiring Green Carbon carbon sequestration credits that offset the annual emissions generated by our own operations.

• The projects implemented by Green Carbon increase the carbon sequestration capacity of existing forests, after which the additional carbon sequestration that exceeds the forests’ baseline is sold on the voluntary carbon market as carbon credits. One carbon credit corresponds to one tonne of carbon dioxide sequestered from the atmosphere. The additional carbon sequestration achieved by the projects mitigates climate change and contributes to Finland’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035.

• Green Carbon’s Finnish climate units are carbon sink projects based on Finnish forests, in accordance with the ISO 14064-2 standard. To ensure reliability and transparency, the projects have been audited by an external party (DNV GL).

Our parent company, Solwers Plc, has committed to promoting the UN’s sustainable development goals that align with our operations, and to supporting the societal shift toward carbon neutrality.
